And researchers at the University of Calgary hope will improve skin stem cells skin grafts for burn victims.
The project focuses on people who require skin grafting after burn injury was a deep destruction of several layers of skin.
Right now, doctors use only the outer layers, the epidermis, to repair the wound, but those classes lack some important functions that are found in the skin, or DermIS.
Dr. Gabrielle Vincent said "it is important for the DermIS where all the nerve endings, and hair follicles and sweat glands, oil glands".
Don Adamson required surgery to repair 15 lashes after a gas tank exploded while he was driving home.
Adamson says he found new skin simply do not work the same way after skin grafting.
Adamson said "I noticed [] first came out, I tried almost froze my snow shovel and I didn't know that."
Says Dr. Jeff bernaski, this project will attempt to recreate the normal skin.
"It may be possible to generate stem cells through the skin of the patient and transplant them to blackmail the skin to regenerate DermIS, improve the overall function of the grafted skin."
The researchers estimate about 1500 skin grafting in Alberta each year.
The doctors explained the project's leading research in the video below, courtesy of "Alberta innovates health solutions."
