"Unfortunately, the set method works in doctors, more like a draft-you have to wait for them to get out of school, to be available come work here," Butler said.

"There are times when you are lucky enough to get a doctor in winter, or fall, but most of the time you can get it in the spring or summer."

"A lot of times, people think they're going to be in the middle of nowhere," said amused me.

"They just don't understand the community feel of the rural family medicine and the integral role you play in society."

Dr. James Rourke, Dean Moon, that amused me is exactly the type of University students and working on recruiting.

"In our experience, if you are from Newfoundland, you were trained here, and you're more inclined to stay here," said Rourke.

He said that the planned expansion of medical school that will allow 20 students further enrollment in the program each year.

"Significantly, which will increase the production of doctors in Newfoundland, Newfoundland".

There are opportunities for students to do practical training in rural centres.

He said amused me that this could be the key to changing the perception many people have about rural medicine.

"Don't turn it down until you try it first."
