Can increase mixing alcohol with diet drinks poisoning, u.s. researchers are warning consumers.

Drinking on an empty stomach is well known to increase concentrations of alcohol. Have been exploring how to raise diet drinks containing artificial sweeteners poisoning danger equally, despite the greater leadership vision.

When researchers were 16 men and women come to the lab three times to different doses of vodka, sweetened and diet pop or placebo in a random order, and found that alcohol consumption with a diet mixer resulted in 18% alcohol concentration breathing higher compared with the same amount sweetened with Blender.

And Cecile marczinski said study author from the University of Kentucky in Highland heights, Kentucky, in an interview with CBC News, "a lot of people probably chose to mix alcohol with diet mixers, because she is concerned about how many calories you're consuming,".

"But its really the highest concentration of alcohol in the blood is much more harmful to the body," in terms of potential damage to the brain and liver and risk for alcohol addiction.

The study, published in the online edition of clinical alcoholism "this week and" empirical research "marczinski, and teammate Amy stamatis measured concentrations of alcohol breath volunteers and had them do the computerized tests measuring response rates to such error and time of the driver may decide to hit the gas or brakes, and they also found higher rates of disability with diet mixers.

"What I think happens to stomach sugary drinks received a little like food. Marczinski said something to digest. " In contrast, researchers get diet mixers through the stomach faster so the spikes blood alcohol faster — like drinking without eating something.

"Sugar slows down things."

The researchers said that while the peak alcohol concentrations above 0.08 legal limit for driving, ready to drive ratings did not differ between alcohol and placebo groups. Participants appeared to be unaware of the differences in alcohol breath.

"The rise in the concentration of alcohol breath associated with diet mixers require further consideration and should inform consumers of this phenomenon," the authors concluded in the study.

"Those that drink and drive should be aware that they may go over the limit, which could have serious consequences for them," said Bernard Lo, who heads the alcohol research and treatment clinic in the Centre of addiction and mental health, in Toronto, in an e-mail message.

The researchers cautioned that the results should be repeated while measuring blood alcohol levels.

Previous studies found higher concentrations of alcohol, the smallest with diet drinks in men only.

Dennis Tumbes, Professor and head of the Department of behavioral and community health at the UNT Health Science Center and the author field study. Tumbes warned in a statement that young women are more likely to drink Diet Cola in the bars and nightclubs of the young men and women should be aware of the greater risks.

Becky Robertson, a 22-year-old student in Toronto which favours mingle with regular soda. She compared the impact of the newly measured to order a double.

"Wise, it doesn't get more alcohol, but the added money, effect". "People may choose to do so."
